Significant research has found thyme essential oil and its constituent thymol to be antiseptic. In fact, many mouth washes and antiseptic wipes often contain thymol. The findings of a study conducted at the Iran’s Babol University of Medical Sciences have confirmed that thyme is an extremely powerful pain-relieving herb, and it alleviates menstrual pain even better than ibuprofen.
The study involved 84 women university students with difficult menstruation. They were aged 15-24 years and were all suffering from dysmenorrhea. This condition is manifested by painful cramping which may be or not accompanied with symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, or back pain. On the other hand, secondary dysmenorrhea means that the pain stems from another condition.
Here the researchers added to the definition of primary dysmenorrhea that it appears within two years of the beginning of menses (menarche) and no pelvic pain during the other parts of the monthly cycle. This is logical because painful menses is more frequently seen among younger women within the first few years of the beginning of menses.
